The Friends & Neighbors Day program (FND) is one of our most popular community service programs. This program was born after the 1992 Los Angeles/Rodney King riots as a way to connect student volunteers with local service organizations and schools in meaningful ways. New and returning students are introduced to incredible volunteer opportunities at various nonprofits throughout the Los Angeles area. Our goal is to inspire students, staff, and alumni to continue their passion for community service during their time here at USC and beyond.
These one-day service events take place on Saturdays throughout the school year. During the school year we send over 500 students, faculty, staff, and alumni to over 40 organizations around the city to serve with fellow Trojans and together make a positive impact in the community. This year Friends & Neighbors Day plans to collaborate with Residential Education, USC student organizations, and others to introduce more students to this long-standing service tradition. We hope that you have a great time participating in this fun and fulfilling day!
In 2017-2018 our Friends and Neighbors Days will take place on:
|August 19, 2017
September 30, 2017
November 11, 2017
Add these dates to your calendar or sign up for our newsletter to get a reminder!
Walk-ins are welcome at FND, but the service projects available may be limited.
FND is never on any of the USC home football games dates.
To be a volunteer at an upcoming Friends & Neighbors Day please click on “Register to Volunteer.”
IMPORTANT NOTE: In general, most sites require students to wear comfortable closed toed shoes. Many also recommend that you bring a water bottle, wear sunscreen, and wear comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty.
Volunteers meet on Saturday morning at the USC’s main campus at the location shared on our flyers (usually outside VKC or TCC). Registered volunteers will receive an email several days before FND with details about their placement, including expected check-in time. The check-in time will vary with some projects so please read your confirmation email. Walk-ins are welcome! The general schedule is as follows:
|8:00 – 8:30 A.M.||Check-in & continental breakfast with your team. Check-in times vary by service project so check your confirmation email and arrive on time to make sure your team doesn’t leave without you!|
|8:30 – 9:00 A.M.||Volunteer teams depart to their assigned site by the time on their confirmation email. Some projects leave early or late, please read your confirmation email carefully.|
|9:00 A.M. -12:30 P.M.||Volunteers engage in service projects at local organizations for approximately 3 – 3.5 hours.|
|12:00 P.M. – 1:30 P.M.||Volunteers return to USC for light refreshments and lunch.|
