USC Fieser Lab Alamitos Beach Clean Up

In the Fieser Group in the Chemistry Department at USC, we are committed to tackling plastic pollution both in the lab and out. Therefore, we like to organize three beach cleanups a year at Alamitos Beach. So far, since we started in 2019, we have collected over 225,505 items! We are hoping to beat our record and collect over 50,000 items in this cleanup!

Come start the semester off right with a cleanup of Alamitos Beach! Our next cleanup will be Sunday, September 29, 2024 from 9:30-11:30 am! We would love for you to join us! To volunteer, fill out the form.

You are more than welcome to join us at Alamitos Beach, or collect items wherever you choose and report the collected numbers to us (we have found grocery store and shopping center parking lots, parks, and bus stops without trash cans to be particularly good spots). We use the information from our cleanups for the motivation of our research, and we report the data to organizations so they can use it for policy development.

There will be prizes for the top collecting teams!

We will provide all required items for this cleanup. Parking is convenient and the metro line stops just a short walk from the beach (takes about an hour from campus on the metro). You can try to coordinate driving carpools or groups to take the metro together here.

Additionally, there are a lot of restaurants nearby for lunch after the cleanup.
